Little La Trobe Street Closure Update
A long-term closure of Little La Trobe Street between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets is required to carry out works safely around the State Library Station precinct. It will be closed for 24 hours, from 7 am Tuesday 19 March 2024 until Mid 2025.
Update 04/12/24:
The State Library Station precinct is moving into the final phase of construction, including entrance fit-out and public realm works.
Key Changes:

A footpath closure is required on Swanston Street directly adjacent to the work site at the corner of La Trobe Street.

Partial footpath closures extending up to A'Beckett Street are also required.
Franklin Street East Site

To enable canopy works, the southern footpath at the corner of Swanston and Franklin streets will remain closed. The closure will resume from mid-January 2025 for further works.
A’Beckett and Stewart Streets

Ongoing preparatory works for piling will continue at the intersection of Stewart and A'Beckett Streets, Monday to Saturday. Motorist access to A'Beckett Tower will be maintained from A'Beckett Street, while access to Stewart Street will be via Franklin Street only.
Backfill Works

Stewart Street will be closed intermittently between mid-December and January for backfill works, with access maintained for pedestrians.
When They Are Working

Little La Trobe Site: 7 am to 3 am, Monday to Friday; 7 am to 6 pm on Saturdays.

La Trobe Street Site: 24 hours, Monday to Friday; 7 am to 12 am on weekends.
Some work may occur outside of these hours as required. During this time, motorist access to Little La Trobe Street and Literature Lane will remain via Elizabeth Street.
What to Expect

Swanston Street:

Ongoing western footpath closures until March 2025.

Pedestrian crossings at Franklin Street will remain closed.

Public realm works continue, including underground utilities, bluestone paving, and the installation of bollards.

Franklin Street:

Southern and northern footpath closures will be in effect through mid-January and beyond.

Local vehicle access to businesses and residential buildings will be maintained at all times.

Little La Trobe Street:

Aboveground structure works will continue, including installation of cooling towers and building facades.

Access to businesses and residential buildings will remain via Elizabeth Street.

Holiday Break
The Metro Tunnel Project will pause from 21 December 2024 to 14 January 2025, with security on site during this period. Some works, including acoustic shed removal at Federation Square, will resume from 6 January 2025.
