Little La Trobe Street Road Closure

19 March 2024 for up to 7 months

A long-term closure of Little La Trobe Street between Elizabeth and Swanston Streets is required to carry out works safely around the State Library Station precinct. It will be closed for 24 hours, from 7 am Tuesday 10 March 2024 for up to 7 months. 

During this time, we will be working:

  • Little La Trobe site 7 am to 3 am, Monday to Friday, and 7 am to 6 pm on Saturdays
  • La Trobe Street Site 24 hours, Monday to Friday, and 7 am to 12 am, Saturdays and Sundays.

Some work may be required to take place outside of the hours listed above.

During the works, motorist access to and from Little La Trobe Street and Literature Lane will be maintained via Elizabeth Street.

Local vehicle access to businesses and residential buildings will be maintained at all times under traffic control.

Metro Tunnel Works Notice

December 2023 and January 2024 Metro Tunnel Construction Updates.

Major works on the Metro Tunnel are continuing in the State Library to build the new underground station.
 
During December 2023 and January 2024, works within the State Library Station precinct will include:
•    main station entrance construction and build-out works
•    construction and fit-out of the underground passenger connection to Melbourne Central Station, station passenger area and operation rooms
•    reinstatement of community space
•    train testing through the tunnel.

Major Tram Works

The tram tracks at the intersection of La Trobe and Swanston streets have reached the end of their life cycle. To continue to deliver a safe and reliable tram service to the area, these tram tracks must be replaced. Sections of La Trobe and Swanston Streets will have disruptions from Tuesday 2 January and extended to July 2024 including a full road closure.

When: from 9 pm Tuesday 2 January to July 2024 (24-hour works)

What to expect: 

  • 24-hour works
  • Full kerb-to-kerb road closures and fencing along sections of La Trobe and Swanston Streets.
  • Extremely high levels of noise are expected during the first week of the works, while the tracks are dug out and rubble removed
  • Detours for bike riders, pedestrians and traffic.
  • Service changes to tram routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 30, 35, 64, 67, 72

Sewer Upgrade Construction

Greater Western Water is constructing a new sewer in Elizabeth Street between Lonsdale and Victoria Streets. The project will be delivered for Greater Western Water by Rob Carr Pty Ltd. 

Temporary shutdown over the holiday period:
Elizabeth Street will be temporarily reopened over the holiday period from Friday 8 December. Construction will then resume in stages starting Wednesday 10 January 2024. 
 

What are we doing and when: 

  • Late November 2023: Construction is expected to be complete at the work site on Elizabeth Street immediately north of Lonsdale Street
  • Early December 2023: Construction is expected to be complete on Lonsdale Street.
  • Friday 8 December 2023: Elizabeth Street will be temporarily reopened over the holiday period.
  • Wednesday 10 January 2024: We will re-establish work sites on Elizabeth Street after the holiday period and resume construction in stages. We will provide further updates before constructing restarts at each work site.
  • Between Wednesday 10 January and mid-March 2024: Construction on Victoria Street at Elizabeth Street will take up to 3 weeks during this time, and will only undertaken at night.
  • March 2024: construction is expected to be complete.
